Watson: 'Gibraltar government in Brussels to make voice heard'

A delegation from the government of Gibraltar, including the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Garcia, will be in Brussels this week on Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12 February.
Ahead of the visit, Gibraltar and South West England Liberal Democrat MEP Sir Graham Watson (pictured) said: "Gibraltar is now 'officially' an EU policy issue at the highest levels. The queues at the frontier are the subject of an ongoing European Commission investigation. Other national governments are getting more and more frustrated by Spain's intractable single-mindedness on the issue."
"Thanks to the government of Gibraltar's policy of engagement at EU level and my efforts to put the Rock on the agenda - not to mention the protests across Brussels two weeks ago - the Commission is now listening. We are making our voice heard.
"Madrid is furious. Despite the Commission's verdict on the frontier, they are nonetheless at risk of getting into trouble in Brussels for what they are doing. They are in the wrong, and they know it.
"I am pleased the government of Gibraltar has decided to follow up their first ever official visit to Brussels last year and make this a regular fixture."
Sir Graham has arranged for the delegation to meet European Commission officials at the highest levels in the Directorates-General responsible for home affairs, taxation, transport, customs, environment and single market. The delegation will also be meeting key MEPs from across Europe to discuss its EU policy concerns.
Sir Graham will be hosting a reception in honour of the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo in one of the Members Salons in the European Parliament at 18h30 on Wednesday 11 February, where Picardo will deliver a speech about Gibraltar and the EU.
