European Parliament this week: Ukraine, US trade agreement, EU relations with other countries

20120124PHT36092_width_600MEPs vote on financial aid to Ukraine this week and debate the EU-US free trade agreement, also known as the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). Meanwhile European Parliament delegations visit Washington to debate data protection with US government representatives and also Yerevan in Armenia to discuss EU relations with countries near its eastern border.

On Thursday (19 March), the international trade committee votes on an EU macro-financial assistance package worth €1.8 billion to Ukraine, the biggest ever to a non-EU country. The security and defence committee discusses the situation in Ukraine on Monday, one year after Russia annexed Crimea. Also on Monday the committee is set to exchange views on EU cyber defence with representatives from the European Network and Information Security Agency, the European External Action Service and the European Defence Agency.
The internal market committee votes on Tuesday (17 March) on the deployment of e-Call, an automatic emergency call system for cars. On Wednesday, the international trade committee discusses with Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström the investment protection and investor-to-state dispute settlement (ISDS) provisions in the proposed EU-EU trade agreement. During a hearing on the same day, MEPs will also consult experts on the deal's potential benefits for businesses and consumers.MEPs will discuss relations between EU and its eastern neighbourhood with their national counterparts from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine during the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly in Yerevan from Monday to Wednesday. During a visit to Washington, MEPs will discuss data protection, mass surveillance, counter-terrorism and passenger name record agreements with representatives from the US Congress and the US government.
