Oceana demands responsible fishing opportunities for 2016

EarthTalkFishPopulationsThe Council of the EU is meeting today and tomorrow (14-15 December) to establish catch limits (TACs) for the main commercial fish stocks in Atlantic waters for 2016.

Oceana urges fisheries ministers to abide by the commitments agreed in the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), guarantee the responsible exploitation of marine resources and finally put an end to overfishing in European waters. Currently, 48% of Atlantic stocks are overfished, yet ministers largely ignored scientific recommendations when setting catch limits last year.

To ensure a future for Atlantic fisheries, ministers must:

  • Align catch limits with scientific advice.
  • Set sustainable exploitation rates by 2016 in all possible cases.
  • Not use the landing obligation as an excuse for increasing fishing mortality.
