MEP Kallas to lead the #ReformParty in #Estonia

MEP Kaja Kallas (pictured) has won the Estonian Reform Party leadership elections and will become the new chairwoman of the party.
At the party congress Kallas emphasized the need for independence within the society. „The increasing reliance on the government leads to passive citizens. We need to encourage people and businesses to act on their own behalf,“ Kallas said.
She affirmed that our goal should be a self-sufficient, strong and smart society that meets the challenges of the future. "Our tax and social systems do not correspond to the changes in the economy,” Kallas said. “Estonia is a small and flexible country that has the unique opportunity to come up with innovative ideas to solve future challenges.”
However, Kallas added that the increasingly populist public debate makes it challenging to introduce new ideas. There are many inevitable social developments that countries face - an aging society, lack of pension funds, financing research and innovation, to name a few. “It's easy to find the reasons to oppose and much harder to execute improvements. People expect us to give clear and often unpopular answers,” she concluded.
Kaja Kallas has been an MEP since 2011 and belongs to the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE). She has been vice chairman of the Estonian Reform Party since 2013.
