President Tajani: #MarkZuckerberg has accepted the European Parliament’s invitation and will come to Brussels

“The Conference of Presidents has agreed that Mark Zuckerberg (pictured) should come to clarify issues related to the use of personal data in a meeting with representatives of the European Parliament.

“The founder and CEO of Facebook has accepted our invitation and will be in Brussels as soon as possible, hopefully already this week, to meet the leaders of the political groups and the Chair and the Rapporteur of the Committee for Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE).

“Our citizens deserve a full and detailed explanation. I welcome Mark Zuckerberg’s decision to appear in person before the representatives of 500 million Europeans. It is a step in the right direction towards restoring confidence.

“Moreover, the Conference of Presidents has decided to organize a hearing with Facebook and other parties concerned.  This hearing will provide members of the LIBE Committee, as well as other relevant committees, with an opportunity to carry out an in-depth analysis of aspects related to personal data protection. Particular emphasis will be placed on the potential impact on electoral processes in Europe.

“Parliament’s priority is to ensure the proper functioning of the digital market, with a high level of protection for personal data, effective rules on copyright and the protection of consumer rights. Web giants must be responsible for the content they publish, including blatantly false news and illegal content.

“Freedom must always be accompanied by responsibility.”
