Commission proposes nearly €4.7 million from #GlobalizationAdjustmentFund to help workers made redundant in garment sector in #Portugal
The European Commission has proposed to provide Portugal with nearly €4.7 million from the European Globalization Adjustment Fund (EGF) to help former garment workers and several hundred young people without employment, education or training to find a new job.
Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labor Mobility Commissioner Marianne Thyssen said: "Portuguese workers have been hard hit by global competition. The Fund's €4.7m will help 730 workers who have lost their jobs, as well as an equal number of unemployed young people, education or training, to adapt their skills and facilitate their transition to new opportunities."
Portugal requested support from the GEF following the dismissal of 1,161 workers from two garment companies in the Norte, Centro and Lisboa regions. The measures co-financed by the EGF could provide 730 workers facing the greatest difficulties, as well as 730 unemployed youth, education or training (NEET) under the age of 30, with various opportunities to improve their skills, including vocational training, as well as help for those who want to start a business. These measures would be supplemented by allowances, such as the contribution to travel and training costs. The estimated total cost of all measures is approximately €7.7m, of which €4.7m would come from the Globalization Adjustment Fund. The proposal is now submitted to the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers.
