Presentation by Abraham Liu (pictured), Huawei’s chief representative to the European institutions, at the DigitALL Breakfast Briefing to discuss Huawei’s H1 Results, 30 July 2019.

"Ladies and gentlemen,

"Thank you very much for joining us this morning. I would like to say a few words to put today’s announcement into a European perspective.

"We are naturally very pleased to see that Huawei continues to achieve steady growth despite external pressure. Those who in May predicted our demise have been proven wrong. Huawei continues to display resilience. We are forging ahead. What does not kill you makes you stronger.

"This is not only a good news to us, it’s a good news to our suppliers, the industry and the ones who believe open market and law based society. Huawei achieves business success through providing innovative products and excellent services thanks to continuous large-scale investments in R&D. We also owe this continuous growth to the trust we receive from operators, especially European operators. 28 out of 50 commercial 5G contracts so far have been concluded in Europe.

"5G is on. Global 5G deployment brings tremendous opportunities to the industry. China plans to build four million 5G base stations in the next 2-3 years. In the latest China Mobile’s 5G core network project, Ericsson and Nokia were awarded 46 % of the market share in total. In the China Mobile 10GPON smart home gateway tender totalling two million units, Nokia was awarded around 35 % of the procurement value.

"These figures illustrate that China’s dynamic telecom market provides a level playing field to all vendors, proving that remarks to the contrary by Nokia’s CEO last week are unfounded.

"At Huawei, we believe that market access doesn’t equal market share. In the field of ICT, market share should be won by providing the best solutions and services to customers, based on innovation capabilities. This is what a healthy competitive environment is about. The figures announced today highlight that this continues to be the case in large parts of the world, certainly in Europe and China.

"We will continue to focus on delivering innovation and encourage our industry peers to do the same. We will also strive to continue building trust-based relationships with our partners, in order to contribute to an ecosystem where this innovation effectively reaches consumers.

"5G is likely to be the best thing that can happen to Europe in the next couple of years. We need healthy competition to bring real benefits to people and society at large. Europe is rightfully taking its own decisions on 5G.We are pleased to see that Europe is developing its own 5G security toolbox, as we are only as strong as the weakest link.
Europe is setting the bar high. No matter how high that bar is, Huawei is confident to reach it and the whole industry should work together do the same.

"Thank you very much."
