President Tsai Ing-wen unveiled the production program of domestically developed submarines on 24 November, describing the moment as a historical milestone for Taiwan’s defensive capabilities. Tsai made her remarks at an inaugural ceremony for the program in the southern city of Kaohsiung, where the submarines are set to be constructed by the CSBC Corporation Taiwan.

The submarines are expected to enter service in 2025. Submarines play a key role in the navy’s asymmetric warfare capabilities and deter hostile vessels from encircling Taiwan, President Tsai stated in her speech. She added in no uncertain terms that this construction demonstrates Taiwan’s strong will to the world to protect its sovereignty.

The submarines follow the navy’s fast minelayer and the air force’s Brave Eagle advanced jet trainer, as the latest domestically developed defence capability, produced as part of a collaborative undertaking with the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology.
