Russian hackers targeted, NATO, eastern European militaries, Google report says

Russian hackers attempted to hack the NATO networks and some militaries in Eastern European countries recently, Google's Threat Ana Group reported Wednesday.

Google did not specify which militaries were targeted in "credential Phishing Campaigns" that were launched by a Russian-based organization called Coldriver or Callisto.

The report stated that these campaigns were sent to non-Google Gmail accounts using newly created Gmail accounts. Therefore, the success rate of these campaigns was unknown.

NATO was not immediately available to comment on the report.

Russia is currently under severe economic sanctions from the West for its decision to invade Ukraine in February 24. Russia denies any claims of cyber attacks against Western targets.

F-Secure Labs, a Finnish cybersecurity firm, described Callisto in 2019 as an unidentified advanced threat actor "interested intelligence gathering related to foreign security policy" in Europe.

According to a Google report on Wednesday, the group also targeted a NATO Centre of Excellence. However, it did not elaborate.
