1684d2a3ddfb2196de386f0f96447524b7bbea8fBelow is a letter which has been sent this morning (16 December) to every MEP in the EU in light of the fact that the electronic cigarette is once again up for discussion.

Dear Member of the European Parliament,

Following the recent vote in the European Parliament overturning European Commission proposals to medicinally regulate e-cigarettes, policymakers, behind closed doors, are once again attempting to enforce poorly thought through and excessively draconian regulation of all e-cigarettes.  Taken together, the proposals currently under consideration would result in a ban on currently available e-cigarettes.

The plans to rush these proposals through before the end of the current EU Presidency mean that proposals designed to decimate the e-cigarette industry and deprive millions of former smokers access the one product that they know will keep them off tobacco for good, will be voted on without the vitally important and necessary consultation and debate.

As representatives of the European Parliament, Council, and Commission meet today for the final time in trilogue we would like to send you a copy of our petition which has been signed by 26,910 e-cigarette users (at time of sending) from every corner of the EU.  Our petition urges policy makers to withdraw Article 18 from the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD).  More time needs to be given to dealing with the regulation of e-cigarettes.  The Commission now needs to go away and consult with all those who have a stake in this debate: the e-cigarette industry, public health professionals, policy makers, and most importantly of all the e-cigarette users themselves.  Only then will the Commission be able to come forward with sensible proposals for a robust and proportionate regulatory regime for e-cigarettes. In the meantime, policymakers can satisfactorily conclude all other aspects of the TPD.

Today, e-cigarette users from across the EU will be watching what is happening in Brussels.  We urge those involved in trilogue to do the right thing and to listen, not just to the thousands of people who have signed our petition, but to the millions of e-cigarette users throughout the EU who have been making their voices heard over the past few months.

Yours sincerely,

Linda Reid, Rob Reid and Adrian Dobbie
