Commission works with online platforms to combat #Coronavirus #FakeNews
The EU is trying to tackle 'fake news' about coronavirus that is circulating, particularly online. The European Commission is working with online platforms and encouraging them to step up their action against disinformation on coronavirus. Many social media platforms are improving their access to authoritative sources – such as public health authorities - while taking down harmful content and exploitative or misleading ads.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (pictured) say that more needs to be done. She said that the EU will monitor the actions taken by the social media platforms and that more data sharing is needed with "the fact-checking community".
In the interests of citizens having access to reliable information, the European Commission has launched a special section on its website on the coronavirus response where you can find information and facts about some of the stories that you see. Von der Leyen urges people to trust their health authorities, the WHO and reputable media with a track-record of accuracy.
