More women reported needs for medical examination

In 2023, 65.7% of people in the EU aged 16 or above reported needing medical examination or treatment. This share was lower for men (62.1%) than for women (69.1%), resulting in a 7.0 percentage points (pp) gap.

The share of people in need of medical examination or treatment increased with age. Among individuals aged 16 to 44, 55.8% reported needing medical attention. This percentage rose to 66.7% for those aged 45 to 64 and reached 80.4% among people aged 65 or over. 

Notably, the gender gap decreased with age. In the youngest group, the difference between men and women was 8.3 pp. It narrowed to 6.0 pp for those aged 45 to 64 and further reduced to 2.1 pp for those aged 65 or over.
