Commission approves up to €403 million of state aid by five member states for the second Important Project of Common European Interest in the healthcare sector
The European Commission has approved, under EU state aid rules, the second health-related Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) to support innovations in medical devices. This includes the introduction of novel digital and AI features in medical devices. The IPCEI will support collaborative research and innovation, as well as the first industrial deployment of these frontier technologies.
The project, called ‘IPCEI Tech4Cure', was jointly notified by five member states: France, Hungary, Italy, Slovakia and Slovenia.
The member states will provide up to €403 million in public funding, which is expected to unlock an additional €826 million in private investments.
Clean, Just and Competitive Transition Executive Vice President Teresa Ribera (pictured) said: “Tech4Cure will make healthcare better, faster, and cheaper. The truly innovative projects in this IPCEI will improve patient outcomes, cut healthcare costs, and enhance EU citizens' lives. Not only that, this IPCEI creates wide ecosystem in the European healthcare sector, where breakthrough innovations are shared along the value chain. This will strengthen the entire chain in the EU and help the green transition of the medical devices' industry. The aid we approved today enables investments in the next generation of medical devices, while preserving competition in the Single Market.”
