In the latest expansion of the EU Reporter team, former ITV journalist Nick Powell (pictured) has been appointed Political Editor.

In a 33 year career with ITV, Nick frequently covered events in Brussels and Strasbourg and produced documentaries in many EU member states, as well as in Ukraine and in the United Kingdom. In addition to his work at Westminster, he set up and led ITV’s coverage of the Welsh Parliament as Head of Politics.

“It’s great to be joining EU Reporter, which I’ve long admired”, said Nick. “As Europe emerges from the pandemic, fresh challenges lie ahead for the EU, as it seeks strength in unity against political, economic and even military threats.

“To paraphrase Karl Marx, we face potential tragedy in Ukraine at the same time as the ongoing Brexit farce. But EU Reporter, with it’s proudly independent coverage will continue to speak truth to power”.

When Nick left ITV, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson thanked him for his service “to political journalism at a very high level” and for coverage that had been fair “on the whole”. The PM added that “it has been very important for the people of this country to get pretty close to fair, balanced and reasonable coverage and I thank Nick very much for what he’s done”.

“I know that some people who remember Boris Johnson’s own work as a journalist covering the EU might be surprised that he’s a fan of fair, balanced and reasonable coverage but I take it as a complement that he admires it when he sees it”, said Nick.

EU Reporter’s Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, Colin Stevens, said “it’s a sign of EU Reporter’s growing reputation and ambition that Nick is joining the team. He will contribute greatly to our independent and fearless coverage of politics across the European Union and beyond”.
