Commissioner Oettinger announces dialogue with Europeans filmmakers

pictureDigital Economy and Society Commissioner Günther H. Oettinger met at the Festival de Cannes several renowned filmmakers such as Michel Hazanavicius and Costa-Gavras, to discuss the Commission’s initiatives for a Digital Single Market. They will meet again this autumn to discuss the content of the Commission’s proposals, notably on how to encourage a better circulation of European films across Europe.

The commissioner said : “It is essential for the European Commission to establish and maintain a strong dialogue with creators. In our Digital Single Market Strategy, we have a clear road map detailing our initiatives for 2015 and 2016. The modernisation of copyright rules is part of it. We will have another meeting with filmmakers in September or October to discuss concretely the content of the Commission’s proposals.”

Following the discussions with filmmakers, the commissioner added: “The main topic of our discussions was the fight against piracy. This will be an essential element of our future proposals. We have also discussed the modernization of our audiovisual rules and how to create a level-playing field for all actors in the sector in Europe, whether they are European or not. ”

Hazanavicius said : “We welcome that a dialogue has been initiated. The creation of a market is something that can bring us together. The audience wants a simpler access to films, to works, the European Commission wants a better circulation of works, and we want our films to be seen by the widest possible audience.”
