‘We stand with Ukraine,’ European Parliament works towards Ukraine’s candidacy
Ukrainian flags could be seen throughout the European Parliament today as the Parliament held an emergency plenary session. They passed a resolution which included harsh sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine and a commitment to work towards accepting Ukraine as a candidate country for the European Union.
“We recognize Ukraine’s European perspective,” President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola said. “As our resolution clearly states, we welcome, Mister President [Zelenskyy], Ukraine’s application for candidate status and we will work towards that goal.”
Throughout the debate, MEPs from several parties highlighted the ongoing struggle of Ukrainians amid the Russian invasion and that Ukraine is a part of Europe. They also debated the sanctions against Russia, how involved it should be in the international community and whether to include Belarus in the harsh sanctions.
