EU summit: MEPs welcome further sanctions against Russia
Wednesday morning (8 June) saw MEPs discuss last week's conclusions at the European Council summit along with Presidents Charles Michel und Ursula von der Leyen.
The MEPs were very happy with the unity shown by the heads of state and government when they adopted additional sanctions against Russia and the determination of tackling the problem of food insecurity.
Many MEPs said however that the summit had not given enough attention to the negative effects of war on daily life of EU citizens. This was mainly due to sharp rises in food and energy costs. Many MEPs demanded that this issue be addressed at the next meeting between heads of state and government. MEPs warned against shifting energy dependence from one part of the world to the other, arguing that it would be repeating past mistakes. MEPs stressed the need to arm Ukraine more strongly, saying that while sanctions are effective against Russia, they would only be of benefit in the long-term, and not in the months that Ukraine needs Russia to weaken. The first round of MEPs' intervention can be viewed.
The debate was opened by Charles Michel, President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the Commission. Both condemned Russia's cynical strategy of weaponizing food and hunger around the world, and woven lies to confuse and divide. Both men explained how the EU would help Ukraine rebuild and continue to aid in the war. They also discussed how it would address food shortages. Both men also stated that Russia would have to pay for Ukraine’s reconstruction. Watch their opening statements .
