Donation of nearly 100 million vaccines funded by Team Europe as part of the 500 million announced by President von der Leyen
Team Europe and the Gavi Vaccine Alliance have announced a donation of 99.6 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to be delivered before the end of the year. This is part of the European Union's commitment to share at least 500 million doses of vaccines with low and middle income countries until mid-2022. The first lots are now being delivered to Niger (496,800), Djibouti (50,400), Nigeria (2,764,800), Togo (633,600), Central African Republic (302,400), Democratic Republic of Congo (230,400) , Republic of Guinea (496,800), and Mauritania (144,000), and will continue in other countries of the African continent in the coming weeks.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said: “The Europe team is pushing forward the global solidarity effort against COVID-19. These nearly 100 million doses of Johnson & Johnson, which will be delivered through COVAX, are among the 500 million doses we have committed to deliver to the most vulnerable countries in the coming months. The first doses have arrived in Niger, and will reach other countries this week. We will continue to share vaccines. At the same time, we are supporting the strengthening of global vaccine manufacturing capacities, particularly in Africa. This new donation will allow COVAX to speed up its deliveries in 2021 and early 2022. Team Europe continues its strong commitment to equitable access to vaccines."
