The European Parliament is expected to pass a resolution early next month in support of strengthening the bilateral economic and trade relations between the European Union and Taiwan, it was learned Tuesday.

Vital Moreira, chairman of the European Parliament's International Trade Committee, told Taiwan's former vice president Vincent Siew in Brussels that the legislature is expected to adopt the measure in a plenary session on Oct. 2.

The resolution, which has just cleared the committee, calls on the European Commission, the EU's executive branch, to begin negotiations with Taiwan on investment protection and market access.

Moreira and about 10 other members of the European Parliament attended a lunch meeting with Siew and his delegation of Taiwanese business leaders on a visit of three European countries.

After the meeting, which is the delegation's last event in Belgium, Siew and the others departed for Berlin for the next stop of their week-long visit, which will also take them to France later on.

The delegation is led by Kenneth C M Lo, chairman of the Chinese National Association of Industry and Commerce, Taiwan, and Siew is on the group as its honorary leader.
