President Ma: Taiwan committed to developing renewable energy
During a speech held at the annual Youth Policy Forum organised by the Ministry of Education on 31 August, ROC President Ma reiterated
that Taiwan remains committed to the development of renewable energy and will continue to pursue new energy resources.
"This is an era when people should not give up any energy options. Taiwan must spare no efforts to develop renewable energy," Ma emphasised. He further pointed out that the nation's renewable energy policy often faces a dilemma, since plans to build renewable energy-generating systems on land draw opposition from farmers, while creating sea-based power-generation systems draws objections from fishermen.
In Taiwan, wind and solar energy are the main sources of renewable energy, accounting for 8.7% of total production. More than 300 young people attended the national conference of the Youth Policy Forum, in discussions of various issues ranging from culture and education to environmental protection.
