Germany's Scholz calls for bigger European Union

Olaf Scholz, the German Chancellor, called on Saturday (15 October) for an expanded European Union. He told a gathering European social democrats that this would allow it to be more effective in global affairs.

Scholz made the expansion of the European Union to include other nations and the Balkans a key plank in his foreign policy since he took office. This has become more urgent since Russia's invasion in Ukraine. In fact, Ukraine was a candidate to EU membership this summer.

Scholz stated at the congress that an EU of 27, 30, 36 states and more than 500 million citizens can make its weight more powerful in the world.

Currently, the EU has 27 members.

"I commit to the EU's enlargement. He said that it was a win-win situation for everyone if the EU grows eastwards.
