Pope Francis said on Sunday (6 November) that the European Union member countries should take responsibility for accepting migrants and not leave it up to the countries where they arrive.

He said that migration had triggered new political tensions in Italy. There has been an stand-off among the government and charity vessels trying to disembark migrants.

"The European Union must adopt a policy that encourages co-operation and helps. It could not leave Spain, Greece, Italy, and Cyprus with the responsibility for all migrants who arrive on their shores."

Francis said that each country in the European Union should decide how many migrants they can accept.

All countries must agree on migration policy, he argued, adding that there can't be any policy without consensus.

Matteo Salvini is the head of Italy's antiimmigrant League party, and deputy prime minister under the new right-wing government. He thanked the pope for his "words of great wisdom".

Salvini stated that Italy cannot be left alone and cannot accept everyone.
