Two people dead, two missing after boats collide off Dutch coast

Two boats collided in the Dutch Wadden Sea near Terschelling island on Friday (21 October), killing at least two people. Local authorities say that two others are still missing.

Early Friday morning, a ferry boat collided with a smaller water taxi. People on the smaller boat fell in the water.

Four people were rescued within minutes of the collision. Two passengers were killed and two others were still missing Friday afternoon. According to local media, the coast guard reports that the two missing persons are a boy aged 12 and a man who is older.

The ferry boat was able to transport all passengers safely.

"It's a terrible day," Terschelling Mayor Caroline van de Pol told reporters. "There is a sadness and a sense of mourning on the island. It is a dark day.

Authorities did not provide any details about the cause of the incident.
