Commission grants new Protected Geographical Indications to ‘Manisa Mesir Macunu’ sweet from Türkiye
The Commission has approved the addition of the product ‘Manisa Mesir Macunu’ from Türkiye to the register of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI).
‘Manisa Mesir Macunu’ is a traditional sweet produced in the province of Manisa. It is made from 41 different spices, herbs and fruits that are mixed into a sugary paste. The sweet has a soft texture and a very sticky consistency with a sweet-spicy and bitter taste.
‘Manisa Mesir Macunu’ was produced for the first time in Manisa in the 16th century during the Ottoman era and is still widely consumed today. It is prepared using a traditional method that has been handed down from one generation to the next. The selection of the best quality ingredients, preparation of the sugar paste and the length of time and temperature at which the paste is cooked ensure the unique taste and expected consistency of the product.
This new denomination will be added to the list of 3,633 agricultural products already protected. The list of all protected geographical indications can be found in the eAmbrosia database. More information is available online at Quality Schemes and on our GIView portal.
