Ukraine's Defenders Day holiday was marked by President Volodymyr Zilenskiy promising victory over Russia as well as freedom for Ukraine on Friday (14 October).

Zelenskiy expressed gratitude to Ukraine's armed forces in a video address, delivered on hills outside Kyiv. He stated that everything taken from Ukraine would be restored and that no soldier was left in captivity.

Zelenskiy stated, "It seems like the current enemy in his evil unites all of the enemies of our Statehood that we faced previously," Zelenskiy stated on the wooded hills surrounding Vitachyv. This is the site of an historical military outpost overlooking Dnipro River.

"By defeating the enemy, we will respond all enemies who encroached upon Ukraine - those who lived, died, and will continue to live on our land. This victory will be for all our people. This victory will be for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Russia's invasion in Ukraine was launched 24 February and has killed thousands of people, displaced millions, destroyed cities, and caused serious damage to the global economy.

In recent weeks Ukrainian forces made advancements, but Russia carried out heavy air strike that struck energy facilities and apartment blocks this week.

"The world knows that Ukrainians don't lose their humanity in any circumstance." In his video address on 14 October, Zelenskiy said that the enemy could "strike at our cities but not at our dignity".
