Italy working for firm EU response to Russia's rouble gas payment order
The Italian government has been in touch with its European partners to respond to Russia's decree requiring European importers of Russian gas to pay roubles.
"The prime minister will talk to German Chancellor [Olaf]Scholz tonight and bilateral talks between energy ministers are underway," Roberto Cingolani, Italy's Ecology Transition Minister, said in a Thursday statement.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed Thursday's decree requiring foreign buyers to pay Russian gas roubles starting April 1, or their contracts will be cancelled. This move was called "blackmail" in Europe.
Cingolani stated that Italy's gas reserves would permit economic activity to continue even in the event of a Russian supply disruption.
