EU policymakers and high-level industry representatives on 3 June launched two flagship initiatives designed to prepare the EU’s energy system for a more digitalized future.

Given the rapid expansion of data centres, the first initiative brings together data centre operators, the energy sector and public authorities to ensure the sustainable integration of data centres into the EU energy system. In the presence of Commissioner Jørgensen, 14 European associations signed a Declaration of Intent while 6 companies signed a Declaration of Support demonstrating their readiness to start implementation.

The event also marked the launch of the “AI.grids” project, to develop EU sovereign AI models together with 48 partners including grid operators and research institutes to improve the management and planning of energy grids.

Both initiatives coincide with the Tech Sovereignty Package, also published by the Commission today. It includes a Strategic Road Map for Digitalization and AI in the energy sector preparing the energy system of the future, including the deployment of AI solutions across the energy value chain.
