NATO calls latest ballistic missile test by North Korea a threat to international peace and security

NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu described the launch of a new ballistic missile test by North Korea this morning (14 May 2017) as a new and flagrant breach of a series of United Nations Security Council Resolutions, constituting a threat to international peace and security.

NATO said that this is a time when de-escalation is needed, not provocation and reminded DRNK of its need to comply with its international obligations, cease all activities related to its ballistic missile and nuclear programmes, abandon all existing weapons of mass destruction programmes in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner, and engage in a credible dialogue with the international community.

Recently elected President Moon Jae-in struck a conciliatory tone during the election campaign calling for renewed dialogue with the North.

Moon said he deeply regrets Pyongyang's latest provocation. Moon has said that while South Korea remains open to the possibility of dialogue with North Korea, it is only possible when North Korea shows a change in attitude.
