New #EUDataProtectionRules: MEPs and MPs to debate implementation and impact

As new EU rules on data protection are set to take effect on 25 May, MEPs and national MPs will met to discuss their implementation.

At this interparliamentary committee meeting, MEPs and national MPs will discuss how the new rules are to be enforced, with representatives of the EU institutions, law enforcement authorities, intergovernmental organizations, enterprises and IT specialists.

Discussion will focus on arrangements for implementing the General Data Protection Regulation and the Data Protection Directive for law enforcement purposes (the “Police Directive”) but will also include their likely impact on the private sector and technological innovation.

Background

Both instruments were approved in April 2016. The Directive has been applicable since 6 May 2018, and the Regulation takes effect on 25 May 2018.

The new rules will strengthen the right to personal data protection and harmonize data privacy laws across the EU. The aim is to protect all EU citizens against privacy and data breaches in an increasingly data-driven world.
