In a joint statement by High Representative of the European Union Federica Mogherini  and the Foreign Ministers of France, Germany and the United Kingdom on the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), the so-called ‘Iran Deal’, the EU has expressed great concern about  the statement made by Iran concerning its commitments under the agreement.

In the statement the EU rejects any ultimatums, but also say that they remain fully committed to the preservation and full implementation of the agreement and strongly urge Iran to continue to implement its commitments and to refrain from any escalatory steps.

The application of secondary sanctions has made it very difficult for European companies to trade with Iran, but the EU remains determined to continue pursuing efforts to enable the continuation of legitimate trade with Iran, including through the operationalisation of the special purpose vehicle "INSTEX". In thinly veiled criticism of the US, the statements calls on countries “not party to the JCPoA to refrain from taking any actions that impede the remaining parties’ ability to fully perform their commitments.”
