The European Commission has launched a public consultation on the European Research Area (ERA) Act, which will strengthen Europe's research and innovation ecosystem by addressing long-standing challenges such as fragmented regulations, uneven researcher and development (R&D) investment, and barriers to researchers' mobility.

The ERA Act will set out the path to reach 3% of GDP investment in R&D, improve coordination between EU and national policies and enhance research careers, open science practices and cross-border collaboration.

Startups, Research and Innovation Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva (pictured) said: “For Europe to remain a global leader in science and innovation, we must make it easier for knowledge, technology, and talent to move freely across borders. The ERA Act is all about breaking down barriers, boosting investment, and creating opportunities everywhere in Europe. We invite all voices, from universities and businesses to SMEs and research infrastructures to shape this initiative and Choose Europe.”

The act will complement the Choose Europe initiative, part of a €500 million programme for 2025–2027, designed to attract and retain researchers from around the world and to promote Europe as a leading destination for scientific excellence.

The consultation is open on the Have Your Say portal for 12 weeks.
