Parliament this week: Sakharov nominees, medical devices, fight against organised crime

20120124PHT36092_originalBack from the plenary session in Strasbourg, MEPs will meet in parliamentary committees this week to see who have been nominated for the EP Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, to vote on rules to improve the safety of medical devices and to set out recommendations on how to fight organised crime effectively. Read on to find out what else is happening in the European Parliament.

The 2013 nominees for the EP Sakharov Prize, that aims to give support to defenders of human rights and democracy across the world, will be announced on Monday at a joint meeting of the foreign affairs and development committees and the human rights sub-committee.
Thepublic health committee will vote on Wednesday on a proposal to enhance the safety of medical devices, including implants and diagnostic tests.

The report of the special committee on organised crime on how to tackle the mafia at the national, European and international level will be voted on Tuesday.
The members of the economic committee will also have a first discussion of rules on how to deal with insolvent banks. In addition, MEPs will debate the implementation of the EU's economic priorities in member states in the framework of the so-called European semester with representatives of national parliaments on Tuesday.

A joint hearing of the environment and development committees on Tuesday will look at the progress the EU has made towards fulfilling the UN Millennium Development Goals, that set up development targets due to be achieved by 2015, and what follows after that for poorer countries in the world.
European Parliament President Martin Schulz will also have a busy week, meeting Greek prime minister Antonis Samaras on Tuesday morning, then travelling on a working visit to Paris on Tuesday afternoon, that will include meetings with president François Hollande and prime minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, and meeting Czech president Miloš Zeman on 18 Septemberin Brussels.
