In 2022, on average, people in the EU rated their financial situation at 6.6 on a 0 to 10 scale. This value is slightly lower compared to the overall life satisfaction rating of 7.1 for the same year.

The highest levels of financial satisfaction were found in the Netherlands and Finland, both at 7.6, followed by Sweden at 7.4 and Austria at 7.3.

At the other end of the scale, there were six EU countries where the satisfaction level was below six, meaning people were more dissatisfied than satisfied with their financial situation. The lowest rating was registered in Bulgaria with 4.6, followed by Greece (5.3), Croatia (5.7), Slovakia (5.8), Hungary and Latvia (both at 5.9).

Methodological note

Overall life satisfaction data is collected yearly, while some types of domain-specific satisfaction (including with financial situation, personal relations and leisure time) and other wellbeing variables are collected every 6 years. The indicators are part of the EU statistics on income and living conditions (EU-SILC). Subjective (self-rated) indicators only partially reflect objective conditions, which are extensively covered in the EU-SILC as well.
