POWER – Exhibition & discussions

10/13/2023 to 02/25/2024, CIVA | Opening reception on October 12, 2023, at 7 p.m.

From oil and gas pipelines to home heating, from wind turbines to recycling centers, infrastructure is at the heart of current debates about systemic change. They divide power in both senses of the term.  POWER  »: as energy and as politics. The exhibition will combine historical references, contemporary practices and projections into the future, presented from the angles of architecture, landscape planning, art and philosophy. Alongside the exhibition, POWER Talks will offer conferences, screenings and intergenerational workshops.

Halaqat – Performance and film

Language, no broblem – Performance

October 27, 2023, Beursschouwburg

Balancing on the thread of (im)possible translations, Language: no broblem brings together stories in Arabic, Hebrew, Dutch and English. How does a person's relationship to their native language change when they begin to master other languages? What power relations arise from multilingualism? This performance by Palestinian artist Marah Haj explores the role of language in our understanding of borders and movement. In 2022, Marah Haj participated in the Halaqat performing arts residency.

Under the Sky of Damascus – Screening and Q&A session

October 30, 2023, Bozar | With the support of the German Embassy

A close-knit group of young Syrian women embark on a radical project: produce a play exposing the culture of misogyny in their country. When one of the participants suddenly abandons the project, the others are forced to personally confront the problems they denounce. Filmmakers Heba Khaled, Talal Derki and Ali Wajeeh followed this group. In 2023, their film was presented in the Panorama Documente category of the Berlinale. The screening will be followed by an online discussion with director Heba Khaled.

Other Halaqat Events

A close-up on Palestinian actress Hiam Abbass is planned for December 2023, in partnership with Cinemamed (exact dates to be confirmed). Other events will take place in Morocco, Egypt, Jordan and Spain. All information is available in the Halaqat calendar .

Straub & Huillet: Uit ontzetting / From amazement - Film

From October 5, 2023 until February 2024, CINEMATEK | Opening reception on October 5, 2023, at 7 p.m.

The work of Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub is considered one of the most singular and uncompromising works of modern cinema and remains endowed with a very beautiful aesthetic. Their films have continually challenged the politics of post-war Europe, denouncing how certain events of the past are perpetuated in current violence. Composed of films in German, French and Italian, the first complete retrospective of their filmography in Belgium finds a particular resonance in a country which has always been accustomed to multilingualism. The opening will take place in the presence of Barbara Ulrich-Straub and Christophe Clavert, who formerly collaborated with Jean-Marie Straub.

Africa is/in the Future – Festival

From November 8 to 11, 2023, La Bellone & Cinema Galeries

The seventh edition of Africa is/in the Future will focus on different network dynamics & relationships. How do we form a community? How to take care of it, for yourself and for others? By what means and for what purposes? Because community care is knowledge and its sharing, and by extension, its conservation and evolution. This festival dedicated to African contemporaneities and Afrofuturism offers a set of debates, workshops, screenings and performances. The Goethe-Institut Brussels supports it with musical contributions straight from Germany.

But are we ready to entrust such sensitive tasks to robots?  ? The third edition of The Future of Living , entitled Finetuners , focuses on social issues linked to the automation of our living, working and residential spaces. The Codes & Algorithms exhibition, organized as part of the conference, will be accessible at iMAL from November 17.
