Halaqat – Performance and film
Language, no broblem – Performance
October 27, 2023, Beursschouwburg
Balancing on the thread of (im)possible translations, Language: no broblem brings together stories in Arabic, Hebrew, Dutch and English. How does a person's relationship to their native language change when they begin to master other languages? What power relations arise from multilingualism? This performance by Palestinian artist Marah Haj explores the role of language in our understanding of borders and movement. In 2022, Marah Haj participated in the Halaqat performing arts residency.

A close-knit group of young Syrian women embark on a radical project: produce a play exposing the culture of misogyny in their country. When one of the participants suddenly abandons the project, the others are forced to personally confront the problems they denounce. Filmmakers Heba Khaled, Talal Derki and Ali Wajeeh followed this group. In 2023, their film was presented in the Panorama Documente category of the Berlinale. The screening will be followed by an online discussion with director Heba Khaled.

Straub & Huillet: Uit ontzetting / From amazement - Film
From October 5, 2023 until February 2024, CINEMATEK | Opening reception on October 5, 2023, at 7 p.m.
The work of Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub is considered one of the most singular and uncompromising works of modern cinema and remains endowed with a very beautiful aesthetic. Their films have continually challenged the politics of post-war Europe, denouncing how certain events of the past are perpetuated in current violence. Composed of films in German, French and Italian, the first complete retrospective of their filmography in Belgium finds a particular resonance in a country which has always been accustomed to multilingualism. The opening will take place in the presence of Barbara Ulrich-Straub and Christophe Clavert, who formerly collaborated with Jean-Marie Straub.
