Global leaders announced a groundbreaking Declaration on Sustainable Lifestyles and Fairness at the 16th Clean Energy Ministerial Meeting (CEM16). This initiative is a major step towards fostering sustainable lifestyles and fair access to clean energy access worldwide.

Inspired by India’s G20 presidency and the global Lifestyle for Environment Mission (LiFE), this declaration embodies shared efforts in sustainable lifestyles and climate action. The European Commission strongly supported the declaration, and their leadership was crucial in moving this initiative forward.

This voluntary declaration unites CEM member countries, partners, and stakeholders in a pledge to ensure everyone benefits from the shift to clean energy. It focuses on promoting sustainable habits globally, advocating for involving all communities, particularly vulnerable groups, youth, and women. The declaration calls on governments, civil society, and businesses to work together to drive fair clean energy transitions and safeguard the planet for future generations.

Developed through global collaboration, the declaration is organized around three main goals:

  1. Policy leadership: Governments will introduce policies that encourage sustainable living and equitable access to clean energy. They will share best practices and track progress to inspire collective action.
  2. Empowering individuals and communities: The declaration highlights the importance of education and community involvement in raising awareness about the environmental and social benefits of sustainable lifestyles. It calls for empowering cities, social partners, youth, and women to adopt energy-saving practices.
  3. Transforming systems: Recognising the need for comprehensive change, the declaration advocates for transforming sectors to ensure sustainable resource use. It focuses on making energy more accessible and affordable for all.

The declaration signatories - the European Union, China, India, and Norway among others - will adjust their policies with these goals and actively participate in a global network to share effective solutions. By exchanging ideas and experiences, they aim to increase transparency and accelerate the adoption of sustainable behaviours worldwide.
