Taiwanese President Ma receives Belgian parliamentary delegation
On 7 January, President Ma Ying-jeou received a Belgian delegation headed by representatives Vincent Van Quickenborne and Alain Destexhe, who were invited to Taiwan by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ma expressed his thanks to the Belgian people for their support of Taiwan’s bids to join international organizations such as the WHO and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Belgium is Taiwan’s 6th largest trading partner in the EU and bilateral trade amounted to US$1.6 billion between January and October 2013, an increase of almost 5% compared to 2012 figures, Ma noted. The President fondly recalled some 2013 Belgium-Taiwan success stories, such as the bilateral Working Holiday Programme adopted in March, the Taipei International Book Fair with Belgium as guest country, the organization of the Brussels International Spirits Competition in Kaohsiung and the Brussels Comic Strip Festival, with Taiwan as guest country.
Referring to the trade agreements signed with Singapore and New Zealand in 2013, President Ma told the Belgian representatives he hoped his government would be able to sign an economic cooperation agreement with the EU in the near future.
