First ever LGBTI human rights conference at the Council of the European Union
ILGA-Europe welcomes the first ever high level conference addressing the issues of LGBTI people’s human rights hosted today (28 October) at the Council of the European Union, the highest decision-making institution of the European Union. The conference was co-organized by the Italian EU Presidency and the EU’s Agency for Fundamental Rights.
Executive Director of ILGA-Europe Evelyne Paradis said: “During today’s conference we definitely felt new energy around LGBTI human rights among the EU institutions and member states. There is a clear sign of mounting support for the EU strategy on LGBTI rights. Additionally, we witnessed positive signs supporting the unblocking the proposal for the EU comprehensive anti-discrimination directive.
"We sincerely hope that the symbolism and significance of having this conference at the Council of the EU together with the positive signs from EU institutions and member states means new momentum for LGBTI human rights in the EU and will translate into real and substantial improvement of the human rights of LGBTI people in the EU in the next five years.”
