Foreign policy: MEPs call for more European unity
The EU must be more united and more co-ordinated to face new challenges to its security, a majority of MEPs said in Wednesday's (14 January) debate with Federica Mogherini on the EU's foreign, security and defence policies. Many said, following the Paris terrorist attacks, that internal and external policies must be coherent and called for more co-operation and intelligence-sharing between EU member countries.Speaker after speaker also supported Mogherini's call for the EU to be the "superpower of peace" and many said the EU should start by assuming greater responsibility in its neighbourhood. A number of MEPs also stressed the need for the Union to be more proactive rather than reactive on the world stage and wanted the EU security strategy to be reviewed. A minority of MEPs called for the EU to focus on fewer areas of action.
