_74992656_skamallafpThe leader of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group in the European Parliament, Syed Kamall MEP (pictured), has congratulated the Conservative Party on its anticipated win in the General Election and said the Conservatives now have a mandate to push for change in the EU ahead of a promised referendum in 2017.

He said:  “This is an excellent result for the Conservative Party that has confounded all expectations.

"David Cameron campaigned on a platform of reform in the EU and he clearly has a mandate to pursue this. The ECR Group will work closely with him and his team as they seek not just a better deal for Britain but a more flexible, open and eurorealist EU that will deliver a better deal for all of its members.

“This election was also positive for the Ulster Unionist Party, re-taking its place on the map of Northern Ireland and we send our congratulations to them.

“This has been a good weekend for the ECR with our member parties in the UK and Finland looking set to enter government and a likely strong showing in Sunday’s Presidential election in Poland. Clearly the cause of EU reform continues to gain ground right across the EU.”
