#Spain's balearic islands move one step closer to banning bullfighting

The parliament of the Balearic Islands has voted in favour of a proposal to initiate a ban on bullfighting and animal fiestas in the autonomous community. Following the vote, a legislative proposal needs to be presented to modify the Animal Protection Law 1/1992 by including a bullfighting and bull fiesta ban. It is foreseen that the Parliament will vote to approve the proposal later this year, which would render the Balearic Islands bullfighting free.
Dr Joanna Swabe, executive director of Humane Society International (Europe), welcomed this encouraging step: “We applaud the Balearic Islands MPs for proving once again that these cruel and outdated spectacles should be relegated to the annals of history. It is high time to put a definitive end to bullfighting wherever it takes place.”
- More than 30 towns located in the Balearic Islands have already voiced their opposition to the barbaric practice that is bullfighting.
- Humane Society International supports the Mallorca Without Blood initiative, led by AnimaNaturalis and CAS International, which aims to end bullfighting in the Balearic Islands.
