Judge to rule on #Assange bid to escape legal action in Britain
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange (pictured) will hear on Tuesday (13 February) whether his legal bid to halt action against him for breaching bail has been successful, in a ruling that could pave the way for him to leave the Ecuadorean embassy in London.
Last week, Assange’s lawyers lost an attempt to have the warrant quashed, but they launched a separate argument that it would not be in the interests of justice for the British authorities to take any further action against him.
Judge Emma Arbuthnot is expected to rule on that point at Westminster Magistrates Court on Tuesday. If her decision goes in Assange’s favour, a public legal case against him would no longer exist in Britain.
It is not clear whether the United States does intend to seek Assange’s extradition to face prosecution over WikiLeaks’ publication of a large trove of classified military and diplomatic documents - one of the largest information leaks in US history.
The existence of a US extradition warrant has neither been confirmed nor denied.
