Parliament this week: #InternationalWomensDay, #Brexit and #migration
Empowering women and girls in the media and ICT sectors is the theme of Parliament’s 2018 International Women’s Day celebrations. Also on this week’s agenda are Brexit and migration.
At a meeting of Parliament’s president and political group leaders this Wednesday (7 March), a draft resolution will be finalized on the framework of the future relationship between the European Union and the UK. Following the meeting, President Antonio Tajani and Guy Verhofstadt, Parliament’s Brexit coordinator, hold a press conference at 17h30 CET. The draft resolution will be put to a vote at next week’s plenary session.
For International Women's Day 2018 Parliament is stressing the importance of the role played by women in media and ICT. To mark the occasion, Parliament’s gender equality committee is organizing an inter-parliamentary meeting on Thursday. Keynote speakers include Sarah Gavron, director of the film Les suffragettes, and Pilar Jurado, MadwomenFest founder. You can follow the debate online from 9h CET. On Wednesday, Parliament organizes a seminar on empowering women and girls in media and ITC.
The situation of migrants in detention centres in Libya and EU financial support to the Libyan authorities was the subject of a joint meeting on Monday of the civil liberties and foreign affairs committees and Parliament’s delegation for relations with the Maghreb.
A delegation of MEPs travel to Sierra Leone this week to observe presidential, parliamentary and municipal elections taking place on Wednesday.
Political groups also prepare this week for the plenary session taking place in Strasbourg on 12-15 March.
