More democracy is needed to solve #Brexit crisis say Greens
The European Parliament has renewed its support for an “orderly Brexit” and against a Withdrawal Agreement without the backstop in a resolution that was approved on 18 September by an overwhelming majority.
They also agreed to the possible extension of the Article 50 negotiation period, provided it is justified and has a specific purpose, such as avoiding a “no-deal” departure.
Reacting after the vote, the co-chairs of the European Green Party Monica Frassoni and Reinhard Bütikofer said: “This resolution reiterates the EU’s commitment to doing everything in its power to guarantee a smooth and orderly solution to the Brexit crisis in the interests of the people in the EU and the UK. It also underlines the importance of maintaining the backstop and respecting the Good Friday Agreement.
“The Johnson government has sought to gag the voice of the people by proroguing parliament. This is unacceptable and cannot go unchallenged. As Greens, we still believe the UK’s future belongs in the EU and stand in solidarity with democratic forces that seek to take back control of the Brexit crisis through a people’s vote.”
