The Commission has approved the addition of a new geographical indication from Spain in the register of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). ‘Aceite de Jaén' is an extra virgin olive oil produced from olives grown in the Jaén province in southern Spain. Known for a clean, fragrant taste with moderate bitter and pungent notes, Aceite de Jaén is obtained from olives exclusively by mechanical means, and stems from a tradition of olive oil production in Jaén dating to at least Roman times.

Olive oil production today plays an important economic and socio-cultural role in the province, with olive plantations accounting for nearly 90% of cultivated land and most municipalities in Jaén having at least one olive mill. This new registration will join more than 1,470 already protected products, the list of which is available in the eAmbrosia database. For more information, see also the pages on quality policy.
