#COVID19 - EU launches strategy to find an effective vaccine, at volume, at a reasonable price
Today (17 June) Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, delivered a video message at the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium, on the EU’s vaccine strategy.
The strategy aims to increase the likelihood of finding an effective vaccine and to guarantee the necessary volumes at a reasonable price.
Vaccine development is a complex and lengthy process and with today’s strategy, the Commission aims to support efforts to accelerate the development and availability of vaccines in a timeframe of 12 to 18 months. The strategy rests on two pillars: securing the production of vaccines in the EU and sufficient supplies for its member states through advance purchase agreements with vaccine producers; and adapting the EU’s regulatory framework to the current urgency and making use of the flexibility in its rules to speed up the development, authorization and availability of vaccines.
The EU is aiming to achieve universal and affordable access to vaccines, supported by the European Commission, especially for the most vulnerable countries who struggle to secure enough vaccines for their people on the global market.
Since the beginning of the crisis, the European Union has already coordinated a global pledging to raise close to € 10 billion, and further funding, as well as political commitment from across the globe, continue to be mobilized.
