Fidesz MEP caught breaking COVID curfew by attending orgy apologizes
This morning (1 December), Belgian newspaper and website DHnet.be reported that police had arrested 25 men at a gathering in a bar in central Brussels. Among those who were fined for breaching the COVID curfew and rules on limited gatherings were diplomats and a “foreign MEP”.
In a police report, a passer-by reported to the police that he had seen a man fleeing along a gutter, who he identified. The man had bloody hands and narcotics were found in his backpack. He held a diplomatic passport and was identified in the report as S. J (1961).
Later in the afternoon, József Szájer MEP, a founding member of the Fidesz party issued a statement admitting to being present at the gathering. However, he denied that he had used drugs and said he had no knowledge of the ectasy pill that was found in his bag. He expressed his regret in violating the COVID restrictions, as well as apologizing to his family, friends and voters. He also described his actions as strictly personal and wrote that they should in no way reflect on his “homeland” or “political community”.
Szájer had already tendered his resignation on Sunday (29 November).
Szájer is married to Tünde Handó who, on 1 January 2020, became a member of the Constitutional Court of Hungary. Handó has been a senior judge in Hungary since 2011.
