Ulugbek Mirzamukhamedov: Charting a path in business
Ulugbek Mirzamukhamedov (pictured) is a new-generation entrepreneur helping to shape Uzbekistan’s business environment – an economy that is expanding rapidly and offers substantial long-term potential. A finance expert with international experience, he is a co-founder of the Semurg ecosystem, which spans insurance, venture capital, and a portfolio of ESG initiatives.
Mirzamukhamedov began his career in the mid-1990s in brick manufacturing, advancing from an entry-level specialist to Commercial Director. In the late 1990s, he became a founder and served on the boards of Alubond Composite Material and Roison Electronics. Around the same time, he started building a real-estate portfolio, supported by his role on the leadership team of Murad Buildings Company.
In the 2000s, Ulugbek Mirzamukhamedov moved on to larger, more complex projects, including those involving international partners. After gaining valuable expertise at Renaissance Investment, he and his partners founded Semurg Insurance in 2020, where he also joined the Supervisory Board. The company entered the market as an independent insurer, with a strategic focus on innovation – introducing modern products and aligning operations with international risk-management standards.
One of Semurg Insurance’s defining features is its independence from banks, distinguishing it from the traditional Central Asian insurance model. Under the leadership of Ulugbek Mirzamukhamedov, the company expanded its product range with socially oriented solutions. Semurg Insurance was the first in Uzbekistan to launch an agricultural insurance program that protects not only farmers’ finances but also the harvest itself. The program responds to the realities of Uzbekistan’s climate and the broader Central Asian region, where droughts, periodic frosts, and irrigation challenges can have a direct impact on yields. This market-first product was made possible in part through partnerships with leading international organizations, including Germany’s InsuResilience Fund, Swiss Re, and others.
Mirzamukhamedov’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond his work in insurance. Environmental responsibility reflects his personal convictions and is embedded across his broader business agenda. Through Eco Carbon Services (ECS) – a company he established to drive eco-focused programs – he supports initiatives that help businesses assess environmental risks, reduce carbon footprints, contribute to greening and reforestation projects, and develop infrastructure for carbon-credit initiatives and MRV frameworks. ECS draws on international best practices and applies Western technological standards, collaborating with U.S. partners such as Climate Compass LLC and Verra, as well as the UK-based EcoEye Ltd.
His support for innovation is not limited to green technologies. In 2021, with his active involvement, Semurg VC was established to accelerate technology entrepreneurship. Beyond capital, the fund provides founders with access to essential infrastructure and expertise for scaling. Semurg VC also runs programs designed to strengthen operational systems and business processes in early-stage companies.
Today, Ulugbek Mirzamukhamedov is recognized as a business leader with extensive management experience and a strong track record of building institutions for long-term growth. The international level of his expertise and the social focus of many of his initiatives are acknowledged by both the business community and the wider public. His emphasis on developing local talent resonates in a country experiencing a demographic boom. Mirzamukhamedov believes that investment in human capital and innovation will enable Central Asia to become a significant center of economic growth in the 21st century, laying the foundation for sustained regional prosperity in the decades ahead.
