Know your rights: Summer travelling in the EU
About to go on holiday? Thanks to the EU it will be an even better experience. The European Parliament is working on legislation to boost passenger rights, while roaming charges were reduced again from 1 July and are getting closer to being scrapped in December 2015. In addition enabling planes to take shorter routes and increased competition for railway services should help to drive prices down for passengers.
In March, Parliament backed plans for more air passenger rights and now it's up to the newly elected MEPs to work out a final text with the national governments. The proposals include:
-
Compensation after three hours’ delay on short flights;
-
clear information at airports on rescheduled flights, luggage delays and passenger rights (informing passengers of their rights, including complaint procedures and forms);
-
guaranteed help getting home when the travel agency or air carrier goes bankruptd, and;
-
price and flight time cannot be changed significantly after the sale is concluded.
There is even an EU application for mobile devices intended to help passengers find out their rights while travelling.In addition there are other initiatives to make travelling easier. The Single European Sky aims to put an end to the current fragmentation of the skies above Europe, enabling airlines to select shorter routes. This should make flights cheaper, faster and better for the environment. Rail companies also face more competition, while a common certification scheme for trains should make rail travel more attractive and eventually cheaper
