As my tenure as U.S. Ambassador to the EU draws to a close, I feel great about what we have accomplished together. There is much alignment between the U.S. and EU on most issues, and we have a lot to look forward to following the ambitious launch of negotiations on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership earlier this month. I am convinced that there are many areas where our cooperation and standards can set a positive model for the rest of the world. The U.S. and EU may still have areas of friction, but I believe we’ve built up enough goodwill and trust that we can work through these issues. As President Obama said at the Brandenburg Gate: “When Europe and America lead with our hopes instead of our fears, we do things that no other nations can do, no other nations will do.” I’ve loved every minute as Ambassador, and have very much enjoyed the time I was able to spend with so many colleagues and friends in Brussels and in EU member states. I look forward to following U.S.-EU relations from the other side of the Atlantic, and I thank you all.
