#FutureOfThe EU: Work together to defend our common project
EPP Group Vice-Chairman Esteban González Pons today asked for decisions on the future of the EU to be taken “in unity and with consensus."
“The time has come to align expectations with reality, time to say what Europe can do and not promise what we cannot do. And it is time to defend Europe because it is the best vaccine against nationalists and populists”, he said during a debate in the European Parliament on the White Paper on the Future of the EU presented by the European Commission.
“Whatever road we take, we must take it in unity and with consensus, because these two words have given us 60 years of peace”, González Pons stated.
Regarding the 5 scenarios presented by the European Commission for the future of the EU, González Pons said the EPP Group believes “a sixth scenario could also be possible, merging the other five, because they are not mutually exclusive.”
“Nobody should forget that the Union is already our present, and now we have to decide which way we want to go in the future in order to deal with common challenges such as globalisation, the generational gap, terrorism, climate change, the migration and refugee crisis, and the rise of nationalism and populism”, he added.
González Pons also underlined: “The debate on the future of Europe is necessary and the European Parliament must be fully involved from now on because Europeans must be the owners of their future.”
